Implementing a Multi-Purpose Studio at the University of Sunderland

CJP Broadcast Service Solutions delivered a multi-purpose studio for the University of Sunderland, redeveloping an existing greenscreen studio and adding a second space dedicated to live production. The facility was designed to replicate professional workflows, equipping students with industry-standard technology and hands-on experience in live broadcast, virtual production, and real-time motion graphics.

The Vision

The University of Sunderland required a high-quality studio that could be used for live productions such as news and sports magazines, ensuring students gained experience in real-world workflows with no workarounds. CJP was selected to remodel the existing facility and integrate a future-proof system that would support live production, virtual sets, and broadcast-quality output while remaining accessible for a range of disciplines.

The Challenge

The studio had to support professional broadcast standards while being intuitive for students from multiple disciplines. The space needed to facilitate seamless live production, including motion graphics, outside broadcast capabilities, and energy-efficient lighting. CJP also had to ensure the installation was cost-effective and scalable while maintaining a fully professional setup.

Live Production Setup

CJP remodelled the greenscreen studio and added a dedicated live production space. The studio was equipped with a Ross Video Carbonite 2 M/E production switcher with Touchdrive TD2S panel, allowing seamless live mixing and production control.

Graphics and Media Management

To enhance production value, the Ross Xpression platform was integrated for real-time motion graphics, ensuring dynamic visuals for news and sports programming. The Ross Media I/O video server platform enabled automated routing and playout workflows, while the Evo Signature storage system provided secure media management.

Virtual Production and LED Volume

A 10m x 3.5m LED volume was installed, using 1.9mm INFiLED with Brompton processing. CJP integrated Mo-Sys Star Tracker for precision camera tracking and the Mo-Sys VP Pro XR system, allowing students to use Unreal Engine for photorealistic virtual sets.

Motion Capture and Gaming Capabilities

For performance-driven applications, CJP implemented Xsens full-body motion capture and Faceware facial tracking, giving students access to gaming and animation workflows.

Outside Broadcasting and Live Streaming

To expand live production capabilities, CJP supplied a four-channel Streamstar system with LiveU remote cellular connectivity, ensuring students could broadcast live from multiple locations.

Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Design

CJP fitted the studio with Kino Flo LED luminaires, providing broadcast-quality lighting while minimising environmental impact.
