Delivering a Virtual Production Studio for Buckinghamshire New University
The Vision
BNU set out to enhance its creative and digital teaching spaces by creating a dedicated virtual production facility. The goal was to provide students with meaningful, hands-on experience using industry-standard tools and workflows. The university also saw the opportunity to widen access to the facility, supporting interdisciplinary learning across departments including acting, design, advertising, and engineering.
The Challenge

High Resolution LED Volume
A 6m x 3m LED volume was installed as the centrepiece of the studio. This provides a realistic, immersive environment that supports real-time virtual production techniques used in modern film and television.
Advanced Tracking and Graphics Integration
The system includes a tracked cinema camera and real-time graphics rendering, delivering seamless interaction between physical and digital elements. This setup enables high-quality virtual scenes with accurate camera movement and dynamic visuals.
Dynamic Lighting and Cinematic Capture
A carefully designed lighting rig supports image-based lighting workflows, while a cinema-grade camera ensures high-quality capture suitable for both teaching and professional-level projects.
Post-Production and Workstation Capabilities
CJP supplied powerful Callisto workstations, designed specifically for virtual production. Each system supports editing, grading, visual effects, and real-time rendering, giving students access to a complete post-production pipeline that integrates seamlessly with the studio’s LED volume and camera tracking setup.
Training and Long-Term Support
Staff training was delivered at CJP’s in-house demonstration studio, allowing lecturers to begin teaching within days of completion. A second phase of training is planned as the facility expands its use across more courses and departments. The installation was delivered on time and on budget, with long-term support in place to ensure continued success.
