Implementing a Ground-Breaking Virtual Studio for Solent University

Solent University Southampton embarked on a strategic initiative to enhance its educational resources by transforming an existing studio space into a cutting-edge virtual production environment. The project aimed to provide students with access to state-of-the-art technology and professional-grade tools, aligning academic learning with industry standards across various disciplines.

The Vision

Solent University sought to develop a versatile and high-performance virtual production environment capable of meeting the diverse requirements of students in film production, photography, theatre, and games design. By integrating professional-grade technology, the university aimed to provide practical, hands-on experience, ensuring students were equipped with the skills required in their future careers.

The Challenge

The challenge was to create a flexible and advanced virtual production studio that would align academic curriculum with industry standards while being accessible to students across multiple disciplines. The facility needed to support high-end film production, real-time graphics rendering, and immersive media applications, providing seamless integration between real and virtual environments.

The CJP Solution

CJP Broadcast Service Solutions designed and implemented a state-of-the-art virtual production studio, equipping Solent University with industry-leading technology to support a broad range of media applications.

LED Volume and Virtual Production

At the core of the studio is a 10m x 3m LED volume, complemented by a 4m x 2m ceiling, constructed with AOTO RM2.3mm and MxH3.7mm LED panels, all powered by Brompton processors. This setup allows for high-resolution virtual environments, ensuring realistic backdrops and dynamic scene creation.

Real-Time Graphics and Camera Tracking

The studio features a multi-node Mo-Sys VP Pro XR server, utilising Unreal Engine for photorealistic virtual graphics. Integrated with the Mo-Sys StarTracker Max system, this setup provides precise XYZ camera tracking, ensuring real-time accuracy in virtual productions.

Cinematic Capture and Dynamic Lighting

CJP supplied a Red Komodo 6K camera paired with Sigma cinematic lenses, delivering professional-quality visuals. Additionally, Mimik lighting tiles were installed to enable dynamic lighting adjustments, enhancing the seamless integration between real and virtual elements—particularly beneficial for film production students.
